New readers page

I’ve updated the site with a NEW READERS page which can be found in the top menu. It’s got a full list of character bios and a little bit of the history of Gatoons. Each of the bios contain links to certain strips which help illustrate the character’s personality. A sort of ‘greatest hits’ list if you like. It’s good to finally have a page where new readers can get up to speed – let me know if you spot any mistakes. Thanks!

Legend of Bill guest strip

Check out this strip I did for my pal, David Reddick and his Legend of Bill site! David is a super cartoonist who is enjoying some well-earned success with his comic. The strip was a great chance for me to get in touch with the huge Conan fan inside me. Ok, I’ve never read any of the Conan books or comics, but I love the Arnie movie. CROM! More about the Al Pacino strip

Here are the two ads which are spewed all over Australian TV at the moment and which inspired the comic below.

I remember seeing the Pacino ad and just feeling sad. He’s always been my favourite actor (sure, he hasn’t made a great film in a while and he’s guilty of epic scenery chewing in the second half of his career, but c’mon, he’s Michael Corleone, that earns him a lifetime pass), so seeing him sell coffee was extremely disappointing. Not that he cares what I think, though. However, as much as I hated him for doing it, it made me ask, ‘Could I say no to money?’. What if, however unlikely, a big company wanted to use Dan and Pete for a promotion? Sure, I’d like to think I would be Mr High & Mighty, and think I never would abuse my characters, but really, could I turn away from the almighty dollar????

Anyway, to get back to the actual strip, this one took a lot of re-writing. I initially wanted Pete to rant on about how much he hates artists who sell-out, then in the final panel, have Teddy come in and sell something. I just couldn’t get it to work though. I tried and tried to force that gag to come, but it didn’t, and I eventually moved away from going meta. You can see the original script below and all the editing that I went through before I got to the final comic.

Dr McNinja vs Axe Cop poster!

axe_mcninjaSMALL

I’m really excited because this pin-up I did was featured on the Dr McNinja website! In probably the biggest event in webcomics history, Dr McNinja is teaming up with Axe Cop this week. Dr McNinja is one of the top 5 most popular webcomics in the world so having my art feature on the blog is a big deal. Axe Cop has exploded onto the webcomics scene the past year and is funny as hell. It’s by the Nicolle brothers and written by the younger Malachai, who is 6 years old! It’s such a great idea I wish I thought of it!

Here’s a breakdown of my colouring process for the piece:

Calamities of Nature pin-up

calamatiessmall

This is a pin-up I did for the Calamities of Nature webcomic. It’s a great strip about topical science and social issues and is really funny. You might have also noticed the FRIENDS links on the sidebar. These are webcomics that I read and I think fans of this site might also like. So go ahead and check them out – it’s a great way to waste hours at work!
